woman during summer keeping her skin out of the sun

Summertime means more fun in the sun with friends and family, a time to get out and enjoy the outdoors. But spending more time outside means more potential problems for your skin. Whether you’re relaxing at the beach or pool, follow these tips to keep your skin healthy and safe during the summer months.

Be Careful of Sunburn

Sunburn is a reaction caused by too much exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. The resulting redness and irritation are symptoms of your body fighting damage to your skin. The intensity of the sunlight, sensitivity of your skin, and length of sun exposure are all contributing factors to sunburn. Severe sunburns can result in blisters, scabs, and even flu-like symptoms. Even worse, repeated sun exposure without proper skin care can lead to skin cancer. Make the following steps a priority to prevent damaging sun exposure.

Wear SPF and Cover Up

To keep your skin safe outdoors, wear a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen that’s SPF 30 or higher. Be sure to apply 30 minutes before sun exposure, reapply every 2 hours, and also apply after swimming or sweat-inducing activities. It may not seem stylish or fun, but wear a hat to cover your face, and long sleeves and pants whenever possible. When hanging out at the beach, keep a beach umbrella handy for when you’re not in the water. Don’t forget UV sunglasses and lip balm with SPF to keep your eyes and lips safe, too.

Go Easy on Skincare Products

With the increased heat and humidity, it may be best to lighten your skincare regimen so as not to further irritate sunkissed skin. If you do get sunburned, try soothing aloe vera. Avoid heavy cleansers and moisturizers and always stick to non-comedogenic makeup. Most importantly, applying less makeup will show off your tan or freckled skin – it looks good on you.

Hydrate Often

Whether you’re hanging out indoors or outdoors, stay hydrated. Drinking water not only helps with dry skin, but aids in circulation, absorption, and flushes out toxins. The right skincare products also provide hydration, so be sure to choose a moisturizer that works for your unique skin.

Change Up Your Skin Care Routine

The weather is changing, which means it’s a great time to rethink your skincare routine. Taking care of your skin during summer months helps keep it radiant year-round, so take advantage of this time and try something new. Acne Intelligence offers skincare products custom-tailored to your unique needs – for summer or any season.
